I would just like to thank all those that helped cater for the Bedfordshire Ladies County game that we hosted at the club on 19th June. We wouldn’t have been able to supply the food if we hadn’t had the assistance of three old members, that are no longer club members. We are very grateful for their assistance.
There were a lot of very nice complement about the green. One lady who has played at our club over the past 15 years stated it was the best she had ever known it. Bedfordshire won the game by 4 shots.
The Men’s County match for the 16th July has been cancelled. Please check the club calendar to see when we are entertaining other groups and assists if you can.
So, what’s happening at your Bowls and Petanque Club? Petanque uses a gravelly surface and so continues to play virtually throughout the year. By the nature of the Bowls green we can only play outdoors in the grass growing time of the year. So now the Bowls season has started. We began as usual with a Spoon Drive at the end of April – back in the cold, wet spell! We have so far played a few league games and friendly matches with some fair success. However, we always need new players so for more information contact us through the website or Facebook or call Joe 01234 871723 (for Bowls). If you want more information about playing Petanque, or you wish to try your hand at it, please contact Beryl on 01767 449116.
On Thursday 9 May we had a men’s County Bowls match at the club. It featured a select Bedfordshire County team playing a North Essex Tourist team. Unfortunately, in an enthralling match the tourists were just too good for the home side. Nevertheless, the spectators had a good view of the play and were well entertained. The picture shows some action from the event.
There are four more County Bowls games to come. Spectators are most appreciated and if you are passing just drop in. You will be most welcome, and refreshments can be purchased from the clubhouse bar as well as tea/coffee. You may find this is the game for you. Why not come and see the cream of County bowlers playing on one of the premier greens in the area – here of course:
Wednesday 19 June 2019 – This time it is a ladies County Game starting at 1 pm.
Tuesday 16 July 2019 – A men’s game again with Bedfordshire County v Cambridgeshire.
Sunday 28 July 2019 – A Bedfordshire County Ladies Triples championship day starting at 9 am (it will run all day so it will be something you can pop in to watch when you have a moment!)
Sunday 11 August 2019 – A Bedfordshire County Vice-Presidents team v Southend from 2 pm.
Don’t forget to give our stall a visit on the Great Barford village FUN DAY on Saturday 22 June 2019.

We are determined to be a community club, providing for as many people in the area as possible. We want to be for you all and that means YOU! So, if you have sat at home thinking you fancied some company, or light competition, or to try Bowls or Petanque then we are here. These facilities are not just for the members! They are for you as well.

And I will leave you with this: A man was walking down the street when he was approached by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless tramp who asked him for some money for dinner. The man opened his wallet, took out ten pounds and said, “If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?”
“No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the tramp replied.
“Will you spend this at a bowling club instead of food?” the man asked.
“No!” replied the tramp. “I haven’t played bowls for 10 years!”
“Well,” said the man, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.”
The tramp was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that?”
The man replied, “That’s okay. I need her to see what a guy looks like after he’s given up drinking and bowls.”
