Great Barford Bowls Club and Petanque Club

Report written by Joe Lound-Keast for The Bugle

Report February 2019

As the cold snap gives over to warmer, lighter but wetter evenings, what better than socialising in comfort at the Bowls and Petanque club in Great Barford. And what have we got for you? Some regular items and exciting one-off activities:

For those who would enjoy social card games there is Whist every Wednesday evening from 7:30 pm to 10 pm. Whist is £2.00 which includes a tea/coffee and biscuits break and there is an optional raffle. It’s not that we have had enough of our friends – we really want some newcomers to join with us so why not try us out.

Every Thursday evening, we have Carpet Bowls from 7:30 pm to 10 pm. Carpet Bowls was devised as a fun version of indoor bowls suitable for playing in small halls. We try to be a little competitive but most of us are relatively new to the game. Mostly it is a good laugh and a chance to ‘unwind’ and have fun. Come to play or just to watch. Cost £2.00 to include tea or coffee. The club bar is also open. We have a small following of regulars so we would really like some new people to come and join in.

On Friday 01 March 2019 we have a Quiz Night  starting at 7.30 pm. Teams are usually 4-6 people. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a team, we can always find one who need another person so just turn up. On Friday 05 April 2019 there will be a Horse Race Night. Entry is £5 per person which includes hot food in the interval and again the club bar is open. Each race will have a sponsor (£5) and each horse can be owned for £2. Then there is a tote for your bets.

Saturday 27 April 2019 sees the next of our Coffee Mornings from 10.00 to 12.00. There will be a variety of stalls including those selling homemade cakes and preserves.
We are always looking for more stall holders so please contact Anne Lovesay on 01234 870693.

We hope that you will find something to interest you all. For more information:

The car park address is in Woodpecker Close, MK44 3BG or there is pedestrian access through School Lane.

Well 2019 has come with a strange collection of weather. It was frosty and now wet and windy. It’s a good thing we don’t try to play bowls outdoors till the end of April. But this means is that our bowling season is fast approaching.  The bowls season begins with a Spoon Drive on Friday 26 April at 6 pm. Once the season starts, we hold Friday evening roll-ups from 6 pm. It’s a chance for some practice, coaching, a bit of relaxation after a long week and time for some convivial socializing.  I must say this every year, “Have you thought of coming along to enjoy a roll-up to find out if bowls is a sport you would like to take part in? – If not why not? Both bowls and Petanque combine gently exercise with a social dimension. Unlike so many of the other sports, each team is made up of players of different levels of ability, and beginners are encouraged to play. This means they get into the sport quickly and play alongside more experienced players who will support and coach. Of course, we would like to attract experienced players to strengthen our competitive base.

However, we play many more friendly games than competitive matches and would like to be able to field even more players. We were all beginners not so long ago and we need newcomers to join now to be the cornerstones of the future. Also, we are underrepresented with women, so Ladies, as well as Gents, please come forward. If you would like to try bowls this spring, then please get in touch through the website or Facebook or call Joe on 01234 871723. If you want more information about playing Petanque, or you wish to try your hand at it, please contact Beryl on 01767 449116. The club has a full programme of league and friendly bowls and Petanque matches against local clubs.

In the coming year there will be more events – social and sporting. We will be hosting 5 County events in 2019 the first being on Thursday 09 May at 2 pm. This will be a visiting Cambridge team. These are prestigious matches and are looking forward to sharing our facilities with the visitors. Spectators are welcome. So, come and see the finest county players on the finest local green.

However, we are determined to be a community club, providing for as many people in the area as possible. We want to be for you all and that means YOU! So, if you have sat at home thinking you fancied some company, or light competition, or to try Bowls or Petanque then we are here. These facilities are not just for the old members! They are for you as well. Do note that our excellent pavilion is still available for hire for meetings etc. For details of charges and availability please contact our Booking Officer, Beryl on 01767 449116. The club’s website also contains photographs of the pavilion and further information.

And I will leave you with this:

Every Sunday morning Tom had attended the Church for mass with Martha.  Every Sunday after the service he took Martha home and then went down to the club for the rest of the day to play bowls. However, this Sunday the Vicar notices Tom missing from the congregation and Martha looking quite distressed. The Vicar approaches Martha and asks what is troubling her.

“It’s Tom”, she replied sobbing, “He collapsed and died last Sunday straight after bringing me home from church.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that” exclaimed the vicar. “At least he must have died with a prayer on his lips. Did he say anything before he went? What were his last words?”

“I’m off to the Club now … put that gun down!” she replied.
